“T-tsukishima Kei!” You stutter, gripping onto the bottom of your shirt nervously. The tall blond in front of you reaches up and removes his headphones from one ear to look at you incredulously. It’s getting late, and he wants to go home already, can’t you wait another day for this?
You glance around the hallway frantically. The other volleyball members left a while ago, supposedly leaving you and Tsukishima alone. If you don’t take this chance, you never will be able to.
“Well, what is it, (y/n)?”
“I-I--”, you take a deep breath to steady yourself. “I-well, um, sort of, like you…”
Afraid to say anymore, you stand there in place as you wait for his answer. What may have been a few seconds felt like hours as he remains stunned speechless.
You want to die on the spot. Well, at this point you consider picking up your things and dashing off right away.
“Yeah, I, uh…” Heat rises to his face as he struggles to find the correct words to say. “I… like you, too, sort of.”
And you stop for a moment, in disbelief that he actually said those words. The shock fades, and you’re filled with elation. What the heck! Why did you need to be so nervous in the first place? You start to laugh, finally letting your tense muscles relax as you wipe away a stray tear.

“Tsukkiiii!”, you cheer, bursting into Karasuno’s gym. With your bag slung over your shoulder, you drop to sit on the bench by Yachi and Kiyoko. Said blond turns around to give you an irritated look, but you know he doesn’t mean it. Your club meetings happen to have been cancelled today, so you decided to drop by the gym and visit the volleyball team.
The setter on the team seems to take your visit personally and whispers a teasing phrase towards your boyfriend, to which he responds with a snarky retort and a dirty glare. You don’t hear the exact words, but you get the feeling you know what it’s about.
“Hey there, (y/n)!” Hinata, being the cheerful ball of sunshine he is, bounces by to greet you before running back on court at Kageyama’s yell. Before you have a chance to wave back, he’s already left. You sigh, though there is a smile present on your face. The volleyball team always has a wonderful atmosphere, and you love spending time with them. You’re thankful for Tsukishima because of it.
Looking up again, you see him staring at you, his gaze lingering for a moment. You blink, before giving him a close-eyed grin and a gentle wave. When you open your eyes again, you see him turned away with a light pink dusting his cheeks.
“Say, (y/n)?”
“Yeah, Yachi?” You glance at the girl.
“Are you and Tsukishima dating?”
“... No, we’re not.”
Neither of you were comfortable letting others know.

You chew the end of your pen, angrily grinding into the plastic. Couldn’t they mind their own business? Some people just don’t want to flaunt their love life left and right! It’s driving you insane. You love him, right? So, you would have to endure this for him because you enjoy being by his side so much. But, this…
This was making that feeling of love turn into disgust.
You can’t even reach for his hand before recoiling at the thought of their words and conforming to what they say.
It sickened you, to know that society has changed you like this. To know that your love has been twisted into hate. You couldn’t really say you had a proper excuse.
Perhaps, it was never meant to be.

Now, the two of you pass each other in the hallway with no more than a fleeting glance and perhaps maybe a subtle wave. It’s hard to look at each other, after a silent mutual break up. Perhaps the pressure got to Tsukishima as well. You find that he avoids you as much as you may to him. The rumours never truly stop, but you’re sure that your heart has.
It’s cold without him by your side, but it’s no longer suffocating either. Is it a fair trade? Only time will tell.
You curse yourself, for being silent this entire time.
Perhaps, things could have turned out differently if you said something.
“Are you and Tsukishima dating?”
“No, we barely talk.”
